Assertive boundary settings - the Art of saying "No"!

Assertive Boundary Setting - December's insights and activities

Welcome

As the festive season unfolds, South Africans everywhere gear up for December’s double-edged sword: the joy of sunny summer days and the weight of soaring consumer demands. Braai's, beach trips, and bustling malls are paired with unending expectations—from buying gifts to stretching ourselves thin to meet every social, family, and work obligation. Saying “no” may feel like a betrayal of the season's spirit, but it’s the key to preserving your sanity, leading your family with intention, and embracing the holidays with true joy. Assertive boundary setting isn’t selfish—it’s an art that allows us to give freely, without resentment or regret.

Insights

Saying no

One of my personal favourite leaders because of his light-heartedness in serious situations, is Archbishop Desmond Tutu. He is also one of South Africa’s most beloved figures. He is known for his courage and compassion, but also for his ability to draw firm boundaries. His refusal to compromise on justice or his personal values is a masterclass in assertive boundary setting. One often-overlooked aspect of his life was how he managed time and energy amid countless demands.

During his work with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), Tutu faced overwhelming requests from communities, organizations, and global leaders. Everyone wanted a piece of his wisdom, and the sheer emotional toll of the TRC hearings was enough to drain anyone. Yet, Tutu had a principle: he would not overextend himself to the point where he lost his capacity to lead with compassion. He famously set aside time for prayer, reflection, and family—despite the pressure to say “yes” to everyone else.

In a public interview, he explained: "You are not obligated to set yourself on fire to keep others warm." This boundary-setting was not just practical; it was ethical. By saying “no” to unnecessary demands, he was able to say a resounding “yes” to the causes and people who mattered most.

Here you can listen to his comments about what makes a great leader.
