Your Team Is Using AI. Are You Leading It?

South Africa Is Rising—Is Your Team Ready?

January 2026

Hello Reader

AI is already in your business.

Even if you have never formally introduced it.
Even if it has never appeared in a board meeting.
Even if there is no policy, no discussion, no training.

Someone in your team is using it.

An email drafted in seconds.
A proposal reworked before submission.
A report summarised late at night before a deadline.

The real question is not whether AI is being used.
The question is whether it is being led.

The Three Leadership Responses I’m Seeing

In conversations with clients and leaders, three patterns are emerging.

1. Ignore it.
Treat it as noise. A trend. Something for the tech team.Focus on business as usual and hope it settles down.

2. Ban it.
Shut it down completely. No nuance. No discussion. No clarity.
“Don’t use it.” End of story.

3. Lead it.
Create boundaries. Define acceptable use.
Train people. Model responsible adoption.
Ask hard questions before something goes wrong.

Only one of these responses is leadership.

What Happens When There Is No Policy?

When AI is used randomly across an organisation, risk increases.

Confidential information may be pasted into public tools.
Intellectual property may be diluted or unintentionally shared.
Staff may over-rely on generated content without applying judgment.
Bias and inaccuracies can enter decision-making.
Accountability becomes blurred.

Who is responsible for an AI-assisted output? The employee? The manager? The organisation?

Technology does not remove responsibility. It often amplifies it.

Leadership begins where you are. It does not disappear when a tool is involved.

What Happens When AI Is Led Well?

When AI is adopted intentionally, something different happens.

Time is multiplied in drafting, summarising, and data analysis.
Junior staff gain confidence through structured assistance.
Onboarding becomes faster.
Routine admin is reduced.
Leaders are freed to focus on judgment, culture, and strategy.

AI becomes a task multiplier, but it never replaces thinking.

The human role shifts from “doing everything” to “overseeing wisely.”

It is shift that requires maturity as leaders are being tested here.

The Leadership Question Is Not Technical. It Is Ethical.

At its core, this is not a technology conversation.

It is a leadership conversation.

  • Have you defined what information may and may not be entered into AI tools?
  • Have you clarified where AI can support productivity and where human judgment must remain primary?
  • Have you trained your team on critical thinking alongside AI use?
  • Have you established accountability for AI-assisted outputs?
  • Are you modelling thoughtful adoption, or silent avoidance?

Ethical leadership today includes digital responsibility.

Ignoring AI does not make it disappear.
Banning it does not remove curiosity.
Leading it builds trust.

Choose Presence Over Panic

Every major shift in business creates anxiety. Relevance. Job security. Control. Leaders feel it too.

The temptation is to react quickly or avoid the discomfort.

Strong leadership requires presence.

Presence to explore.
Presence to ask questions.
Presence to admit what you do not yet know.
Presence to design a response rather than default to one.

AI is not the first disruption business has faced. It will not be the last.

The organisations that thrive will not be those that adopt the fastest.
They will be those that adopt responsibly.

A Practical Starting Point

If you have not yet formalised your approach, begin here:

  1. Draft a simple AI use guideline. Keep it clear and practical.
  2. Define restricted data categories. Be explicit.
  3. Identify approved tools.
  4. Provide short training on responsible use and critical review.
  5. Clarify accountability for final outputs.

It does not need to be complex. It does need to be intentional.

Technology will continue to evolve.

Leadership must evolve with it.
